Even with a backer, that money can just go to increasing storage capabilities or further streamlining data transactions. 10Gbps transceivers, like Cisco’s SFP-10G-LR, fetch for very low costs. Furthermore, 10G is still relevant on the market. Many data centers and network operators still thrive on 10Gbps speeds.
Future-Proofing the System
There’s no sense buying into the 100G hype, or even 40G, without a competent system to back it up. You should have a more advanced setup first that can max future components. Blowing that money now would mean more speed, but doing it a few months from release of 100Gbps transceivers? That would seem like a waste.
Deflating the Hype
Let those who can buy the first batch buy the first batch. 100G tech will come at an inflated premium when it finally releases, so it would compel you to let the hype pass. It’s for sure; you can snag a used 100Gbps transceivers for half the price after a few months.
Mobile is driving the trends in every aspect of technology now. The day the 1TB microSD card and 1GB mobile Internet comes, then you can safely switch to 100Gbps optical transceivers. For now, surf in the current standard of 10G speeds and wait for the perfect chance to spend and upgrade.
