Cranes are very useful in moving large and heavy loads in construction and other industrial sites. These pieces of heavy equipment, however, have been involved in many accidents. In many instances, crane accidents have caused property damages, lost hours, and worst, loss of life.
Crane operators are strictly required to practice safety. Here are several crane safety practices that companies should implement to ensure everyone’s protection on job sites:
Hire Well-trained Personnel
Improper set-up has been one of the major causes of many construction accidents involving cranes. To avoid this, only highly qualified personnel should operate the equipment at all times. A well-trained operator knows the proper set up and all other things needed to operate a crane properly.
Get a Competent Site Supervisor
Crane selection and set-up are crucial in hiring a crane servicing. This requires construction site supervisors to have relevant knowledge and experience on the field. He should know all the safety measures that include installing anti-two block devices and load indicating devices. He should also have a good understanding on how to inspect cranes and all the controls before use.
Follow the Manufacturer’s Instructions
Construction sites must operate the crane within the capacity set by the manufacturer. Operators are required to follow signals and instructions as they operate the equipment. There are certain instances, however, when it’s not convenient to do or there could be no recommendations for some situations. When these happen, the supervisor must seek the advice of a qualified engineer to know what to do and how to adjust the equipment safely.
Establish Sufficient Clearances
Check for all electrical and other hazards nearby before starting work with the crane. In general, there must be enough access clearances to the job site. Specifically, operators should remember to maintain a 10-foot clearance from power lines.
As they say, prevention is better than cure. Apart from practicing safety measures during crane operations, regular inspection should be done to ensure all controls and components are working properly.
